The text for this unit, The Dragon machine by Helen Ward provides a fictional context for the children’s instructional writing. The children begin by exploring the book – and Wayne Anderson’s detailed illustrations. Taking care of their own dragons, the children build their own dragon machines and fly their dragons to the Great Wilderness. They create maps of the wilderness and instructions on how to get there. Along the way there are lots of opportunities for them to practice giving oral instructions and opportunities for cross-curricular links with DT, Art and Geography.
