In this unit, a combination of non-fiction books and BBC Nature documentaries provide the stimulus for children to explore the layout, vocabulary and purpose of non-chronological reports. Whilst the example is based around Polar Bears, similar texts can be found to replace with any other animal linked to the opening experience – a visit to a zoo, wildlife park or animal sanctuary. This venue also provides a real audience for the writing – a book or report for visitors. It is also helpful if there are links to the areas covered in Science e.g. habitat, adaptation or life cycles.
