The Mysteries of Harris Burdick – Y6 Narrative

If you are not familiar with ‘the mysteries’ you will wonder how on earth you have managed to teach for so long without this set of illustrations. They are available in a book format, but I think this portfolio collection is so much more versatile it is well worth the extra money.
This unit uses the 14 illustrations by the mysterious writer Harris Burdick as a stimulus for writing narrative. It requires the children to be experieinced in writing various genre types and narrative techniques – it draws together everything they have learnt about writing narrative over the last 7 years allowing them to make individual authorial choices. Further information and ideas can be found on the official website where there is also space for budding authors to submit their finished stories….or even music and animations.
